Arsenal will see the best of Mesut Ozil this season, says Per Mertesacker

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker is confident that Gunners midfielder Mesut Ozil can have a brilliant season

Per Mertesacker believes that Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil will enjoy his best spell at the club next season.

Ozil has occasionally shown the type of brilliance that he demonstrated so often under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid but injuries have stunted his progress at The Emirates Stadium.

I’m pretty confident that he has his best and his first full season in front of him

Per Mertesacker

Speaking to Arsenal’s website, the German centre-half insisted that if Ozil can avoid getting injured then the fans will see him perform to his full potential next year.

“The key will be not to get any injuries or niggles. He’s a good player when he’s fully fit but obviously he needs to gain that little extra confidence to play his best. We will see – I’m pretty confident that he has his best and his first full season in front of him.”

Mertesacker went on to say that Ozil is one of Arsenal’s key players and that his creativity is the key to unlocking opposition defences.

“He is one of our key players,” Mertesacker continued.

“Him in good fitness, at his best – there’s a lot more to come from him and the second part of last season when he came back from injury, you could see how important he is for us as a team with his key passes, being in between the lines and always carrying a threat to the opponent.”

There is a feeling amongst most English fans that Ozil has not completely justified his club record transfer fee since arriving from Real Madrid for £42.5M.

He returned from a knee problem towards the end of last season and was instrumental for Arsenal in his favoured number 10 role as they finished third in the Premier League and won the FA Cup.

Mertesacker knows Ozil better than most. The pair were Germany team mates for five years before Mertesacker retired from international duty in 2014 following their World Cup success.
