Arsene Wenger delivers update on Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez
Arsene Wenger reveals that Alexis Sanchez is due to report back to Arsenal on 3 August after his extended holiday
Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Alexis Sanchez will miss the start of the season due to his extended summer break.
The 26-year-old forward is currently recovering from a gruelling campaign after helping Arsenal win the FA Cup title last season and then inspire Chile to Copa America glory earlier this month.
Sanchez has now been been given time off to recover from a long season and will report back to Arsenal on 3 August to begin his pre-season preparations.
It means that the forward will miss Arsenal’s Community Shield clash against Chelsea on 2 August, and Wenger conceded that it will take about three weeks for Sanchez to regain his fitness following his return to the club.
Wenger told a news conference in Singapore on Tuesday: “He will be back on 3 August and usually it takes three weeks to be competitive. With Alexis it could be a little bit less. He will certainly miss the first game.
“He went into the Copa America a little bit jaded but when he had to turn up in the final he was there, always dangerous, always provoking opponents and the one with the guts to take the final penalty.”
Sanchez scored 16 goals and provided eight assists for his team-mates in 35 appearances last season.
He also scored both goals in the FA Cup semi-final against Reading and helped the Gunners end the season with silverware after scoring in the final against Aston Villa to secure a 4-0 victory at Wembley.
