Arsene Wenger was thrilled to see Alexis Sanchez inspire Chile to Copa America glory last weekend
Arsene Wenger has revealed that he sent Alexis Sanchez a congratulatory text message after the Arsenal playmaker inspired Chile to Copa America glory last weekend.
The 26-year-old forward confidently chipped home the winning penalty against Argentina in Saturday’s final to hand the hosts their first major international trophy and cap a sparkling campaign for Sanchez.
Sanchez has now been been given time off to recover from a long season and will report back to Arsenal on 3 August to begin his pre-season preparations.
And Wenger admitted that he was thrilled to see Sanchez in such good form for his country as he inspired them to an historic title on home soil.
Wenger told Arsenal’s website: “I texted him [after the final] and he texted me back. He was already focused on next season with Arsenal and wants to win everything with us. He was thrilled and very happy.”
Wenger continued: “He has shown again that he is scared of nothing. He took the ball and chipped the keeper. It was quite audacious but I was of course over the moon to see him bring the trophy to a country that has waited for such a long time.
“It is an historic achievement and when you’re a football player, you want to do that, so I’m very happy for him.”
Sanchez helped Arsenal finish in third place in the Premier League to ensure Arsene Wenger’s side qualified directly for the Champions League group stage next season.
He scored 16 goals and providing eight assists for his team-mates in 35 appearances.
He also scored both goals in the FA Cup semi-final against Reading and helped the Gunners end the season with silverware after scoring in the final against Aston Villa to secure a 4-0 victory at Wembley.
