Carragher, Lineker and more: Twitter reacts to £49m bid for Liverpool star
Jamie Carragher and Gary Lineker take to Twitter after reports of Man City's £49m bid for Raheem Sterling emerge
Jamie Carragher has bemoaned Liverpool’s inability to land top signings after the Reds agreed a £49m fee to sell Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.
The England international has been hankering for a move away from Anfield for most of the summer transfer window after his agent confirmed the forward would not be signing a new deal with the Reds.
News of City’s £49m bid inevitably prompted a flurry of Twitter activity, and here is a selection of our favourite tweets from the professionals, past and present, to the latest transfer development.
Former Liverpool centre-half Carragher (@Carra23) sums up the thoughts of most Reds supporters: “I wish Lfc bought players as well as they sold them!!”
Another Reds legend Terry McDermott (@TerryMac777) is very happy with the bit of business: “So effectively its £49m plus James Milner for Sterling from Manchester City….fantastic business for us #lfc”
Retired England striker Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) is letting his followers read between the Twitter lines: “49 million pounds Sterling!”
Former Chelsea midfielder Jody Morris (@morriskid) has a rather different viewpoint to most on Twitter: “Man city get a young talent who should only improve (if given game time)..Liverpool got good money..and Sterling gone to a better team!! And no matter who thinks he is or isn’t worth it..the only thing that matters is that City thinks he is!!”
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand (@rioferdy5) has a rather cynical approach to modern-day football: “Anyone talking about ‘loyalty’ in football needs a reality check….clubs & players lack loyalty these days…its a business now 100%.”
Finally, Troy Townsend (@Towno10) seems to think United are the real winners this weekend: “Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger could do more for United than Sterling for City. Whatever way round Manchester is alive.”
