Matt Le Tissier couldn’t disguise his disappointment after Toby Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday morning.

The Saints legend had been hoping that the Belgium international might join Southampton on a permanent deal after the defender spent last season on loan at St Mary’s.

However, Alderweireld penned a long-term deal with the north London side after Tottenham reportedly agreed an £11.5m fee with La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, in chronological order to Alderweireld’s switch to White Hart Lane this morning.

Former Southampton midfielder Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) is a saddened Saints legend: “Disappointed to see Toby sign for Spurs but not end of the world #wemarchon”

However, Spurs playmaker Nacer Chadli (@NChadli) is delighted to welcome his fellow Belgium international the White Hart Lane family: “Welcome to my mate @AlderweireldTob in the spurs familly @SpursOfficial”

Journalist Simon Peach ‏(@SimonPeach) gives Spurs fan an idea of what to expect from the new signing on and off the pitch: “Alderweireld a fine defender – technically the best #SaintsFC have had in many years. A nice chap off the field, always speaks to media.”

Finally, Alderweireld’s former club Atletico (@atletienglish) have a nice message of support for the versatile defender: “Agreement with @SpursOfficial for the transfer of @AlderweireldTob. Best of luck Toby!”
