John Aldridge explains Liverpool signing Brendan Rodgers really needs
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge explains why the Reds still won't finish in the top four next season
John Aldridge has welcomed Liverpool’s signing of Nathaniel Clyne, but the Reds legend has warned Brendan Rodgers that he still needs to sign a prolific centre-forward.
The 24-year-old right-back signed a five-year deal with the five-time European champions on Wednesday afternoon after the Reds struck a reported £12.5m deal with Southampton.
Liverpool have already signed Brazil international Roberto Firmino, Manchester City midfielder James Milner, Burnley striker Danny Ings, Bolton goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and Charlton youngster Joe Gomez this summer.
But former Liverpool forward Aldridge is adamant that Rodgers is still lacking a goal-scorer capable of scoring 20 times a season.
Aldridge wrote on Kicca: “Liverpool have bought some good players ion recent weeks, but they will struggle to finish in the top four because they haven’t bagged a proven goal-scorer.
“I’m very happy with Nathaniel Clyne as we needed someone in that positions, the Brazilian Firmino should slot right in and Milner is a good signing following the departure of Steve Gerrard.
“But they have not signed the 20 goal-a-season player they really needed. Unfortunately Sturridge will not deliver that many goals and Ings will struggle to get the chances in his first season.
“They haven’t replaced Suarez and that’s what they had to do. You need someone who will score 20+ goals season in, season out and they still haven’t go that player.
“And without that striker they will not break into the top 4 – where the fans expect them to be.”
Liverpool sold Luis Suarez in a £75m deal to Champions League holders Barcelona last summer.
Daniel Sturridge managed to score just four times in 12 Premier League games in an injury-hit season.
Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert managed to net a combined three goals in the top-flight last term.
