Jose Mourinho confirms new Chelsea signing to face Barcelona
Jose Mourinho says that Radamel Falcao will feature for Chelsea in their pre-season clash with Barcelona on Tuesday
Radamel Falcao will feature in Chelsea’s pre-season friendly against Barcelona, Jose Mourinho has confirmed.
The Colombian striker featured briefly against Paris Saint-Germain as he continues to regain fitness following the Copa America this summer.
Mourinho thought that a 20-minute substitute appearance would benefit his South American players more than a small-sided training session.
Mourinho told Chelsea TV: “I discussed it a lot with [assistant coach] Rui Faria and we thought that 20 minutes of football is more rich, has more ingredients than training in a small group of three, so we decided to give Falcao, Willlian and Juan Cuadrado this 20 to 25 minutes which was very good for them.”
The Blues face Champions League winners Barcelona in Washington on Tuesday night and Mourinho has revealed that Falcao will play for at least half an hour.
He said: “Now they are not ready to start against Barcelona, but I think they can go from 20 to 30 minutes. I will give them that.”
Falcao’s recent loan spell at Manchester United was hampered by poor fitness and it seems that Mourinho is determined to give him ample recovery time ahead of the new season.
The former Atletico Madrid striker ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament whilst playing for parent club Monaco in 2014.
As a result, he missed Colombia’s impressive World Cup campaign and has struggled to find form ever since. Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal opted against making the forward’s move permanent as he managed just four league goals for the club last season.
However, Mourinho believes that Falcao can improve his title-winning Chelsea squad and is keen for the Colombian to regain full match fitness.
