Juan Mata: Man United must battle with Chelsea for the title
Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata says it is important the Red Devils get back competing for silverware again
Juan Mata says it is important Manchester United challenge for silverware next season.
The Red Devils haven’t been in the Premier League title race since Sir Alex Ferguson retired following their 20th top-flight crown in May 2013.
We know that we have to be fighting for titles
Mata was signed by the Scot’s predecessor David Moyes but the £37.1m arrival was unable to help United avoid a disappointing seventh-place finish.
However, the Spain international is confident that the Red Devils are on the cusp of challenging under the guidance of current manager Louis van Gaal.
“We all believe that we need to do one more step forward and try to fight for the title because that’s what this club means – fighting for trophies,” Mata is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“It’s the pressure this club always has. We know that we have to be fighting for titles. We feel this is what the fans deserve because it’s amazing how they support us. We want to do it for them, and hopefully this season we’ll do it.”
Van Gaal has already signed four players in the summer transfer window.
The Dutchman signed his compatriot Memphis Depay in a £25m deal from Eredivisie winner PSV Eindhoven in May.
The United manager has since added World Cup winner Bastian Schnweisteiger, Italy international Matteo Darmian and Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin to his Red Devils squad.
The Manchester outfit face San Jose Earthquakes in the next game of their pre-season tour on Wednesday.
