Liverpool transfers: Brendan Rodgers gives Christian Benteke update
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is coy on reports linking the Reds with a move for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke
Brendan Rodgers is apparently in the dark over Liverpool’s heavily-reported move for Christian Benteke after the Reds manager gave a frosty interview on Australian television.
The Merseyside were speculated to have activated the Belgium striker’s £32.5m contract release clause over the weekend following the £49m sale of Raheem Sterling to Liverpool.
The Reds eased to their third successive pre-season win on Monday after summer signings James Milner and Danny Ings scored in a 2-0 victory over Adelaide United.
Following the victory, Rodgers was asked by Channel 9 for an update on the club’s apparent bid to sign the Aston Villa striker.
Rodgers said: “Er, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
When probed further, Rodgers replied: “No, I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Benteke has scored 49 goals in 100 games in all competitions for Villa following his move to the Birmingham side from Genk in 2012.
The 6ft 3ins striker missed last summer’s World Cup after he ruptured his Achilles tendon two months before the start of the tournament.
The Belgium man could become Liverpool’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window.
