Liverpool transfers: David James issues Christian Benteke warning
Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James doesn't believe Christian Benteke is suited to the Reds's style of play
David James has questioned the logic behind Liverpool’s bid to sign Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.
The Reds have been linked with a £32.5m offer for the Belgium international as Brendan Rodgers looks to strengthen his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
Liverpool are looking to bolster their attacking front-line after Raheem Sterling completed a £49m move to the two-time Premier League champions Manchester City last week.
But former Liverpool and Villa goalkeeper James isn’t sure whether Benteke will be able to adapt to the Reds’s style of play.
“I’m surprised with Liverpool’s interest in Christian Benteke,” Benteke told talkSPORT.
“He had a good run into the end of the season with Aston Villa but I can’t understand how he’s a Liverpool style player, especially the way Brendan Rodgers likes to play.
“Everybody has a price but £32.5million is a lot of money.”
Benteke has scored 49 goals in 100 games in all competitions for Villa following his move to the Birmingham side from Genk in 2012.
The 6ft 3ins striker missed last summer’s World Cup after he ruptured his Achilles tendon two months before the start of the tournament.
The Belgium man could become Liverpool’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window.
