Liverpool transfers: Ex-Reds questions Raheem Sterling deal

David Thompson questions why Liverpool didn't look to sign Edin Dzeko or Stevan Jovetic as part of Raheem Sterling deal

David Thompson has questioned why Liverpool didn’t attempt to bring a Manchester City player to Anfield as part of the Raheem Sterling deal.

The Reds have reportedly agreed a £49m fee with the Premier League runners-up for the want-away England international.

Liverpool initially signed Sterling in a £500,000 deal from Queens Park Rangers in 2010 before the forward blossomed into one of England’s most promising youngsters.

However, former Reds midfielder Thompson believes Brendan Rodgers should have looked to land Edin Dzeko or Stevan Jovetic in a cash plus player deal for the 20-year-old forward.

Thompson added that he wouldn’t trust the Liverpool hierarchy to spend the money raised by Sterling’s imminent sale wisely amid reports of a £30m bid for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke.

The retired Blackburn Rovers midfielder added that Liverpool should spend some of the money on acquiring a live-in doctor to keep Daniel Sturridge injury-free next season.
