Liverpool transfers: Three alternatives to Christian Benteke
Three alternative strikers Liverpool could target if Brendan Rodgers fails in bid to land Christian Benteke this summer
Zenit St Petersburg centre-forward Salomon Rondon is available for around £15m, and after an impressive season in which he scored 20 goals in 44 appearances for the Russian side, the Venezuelan international has caught the attention of Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers. The Reds have yet to make a formal bid for the 25-year-old, but after missing out on Carlos Bacca who joined AC Milan last week, Rondon is likely to be high up on Liverpool’s target list if they fail to land Benteke from Aston Villa. The Zenit man, who stands at 6ft 2ins, is known for his aerial ability and ferocity on the ball, and would bring a wealth of experience to Anfield were he to sign on the dotted line.
Liverpool are said to be willing to pay £28m for the striker, and with reports suggesting new contract talks between Alexandre Lacazette and Lyon have fallen through, the Reds will be on high alert to make an offer to bring the France international to Anfield. Lacazette was Ligue 1’s top goal-scorer this season with 27 league goals in 33 appearances – a statistic that will prove attractive to Liverpool as they attempt to sign an out-and-out striker after a lacklustre 2014/15 campaign. Rodgers will face a battle to land Lacazette’s signature with Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain all staking an interest in the Frenchman.
Rodgers is reported to be a massive fan of the Mexican, and after failing to impress whilst on loan at Real Madrid, Javier Hernandez is returning to Manchester United with little chance of making it off the bench this season. Juventus and Inter Milan have also expressed an interest in the forward, who recently broke his collarbone whilst on international duty, and with the Red Devils reportedly being unwilling to sell to a Premier League rival, Liverpool will have to pull out all the stops to sign Chicharito. The 27-year-old scored 37 goals in 102 appearances at Old Trafford, but is now surplus to requirements in Louis Van Gaal’s team, with United reportedly wanting around £8m for the player.
