Liverpool transfers: Three reasons why Christian Benteke won’t be good signing
Three reasons why Aston Villa striker won't be a hit at Liverpool amid reports of an imminent £32.5m move
Goals to game ratio
Last season, Aston Villa went through a 659-minute goal drought with Christian Benteke leading the attack. While he did come into a run of goals under new manager Tim Sherwood after the departure of Paul Lambert, the Belgian international has been known to go through spells of not hitting the back of the net. Last season, he scored 16 goals in 29 games. During his three-year spell at Aston Villa following his move in 2012, he has scored 42 goals in 82 appearances. While he did net 12 times in 12 games to save Villa from the drop, he did not impress in the FA Cup final where Villa lost 4-0 to Arsenal.
Similar player to Balotelli
Mario Balotelli is, supposedly at least, commanding in the box and is a strong presence to worry the opposing defence. The Belgian international is similar and many teams will try to ensure players like the 6ft 3ins do not have any time in the box. However, Balotelli struggled within the Liverpool team last season and only scored four goals for the Merseyside club. Some fans have suggested that they feel Benteke is a cross between Andy Carroll and Balotelli. So it is fair to say the Reds fans have had mixed emotions over the Belgian striker.
Liverpool needs a commanding strike force
With Raheem Sterling exiting Anfield in a £50m move to Manchester City earlier this week, Liverpool is in need for cover in that area. England striker Daniel Sturridge made 18 appearances for Liverpool last season because of a succession of injuries and is out until September with a hip problem. With the likes of Karim Benzema and Pedro Rodriguez, who could be up for grabs this summer, Liverpool need a more commanding man to lead their front-line. With manager Brendan Rodgers looking to re-establish his team in the Premier League, they may need someone who can give them that added boast to score goals.
