Liverpool transfers: Three strikers Brendan Rodgers could sign
David Marsh suggests three strikers that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers should target this summer
Twenty-four year-old Alexandre Lacazette is said to be desperate for a move away from his native France this summer. So much so that he is rumoured to be ready to hand in a transfer request to the Lyon hierarchy imminently. Lacazette’s elusiveness, speed, and eye for goal have sparked interest from a range of clubs across Europe, with Liverpool reportedly leading the race for his services. One thing Brendan Rodgers loves in his team is pace, and the likes of Daniel Sturridge, Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and more recently Luis Suarez were able to offer him that to form a devastating attack that so nearly brought the Premier League title to Anfield. Lacazette has the attributes that Brendan Rodgers likes to deploy in attack, and with the striker looking for a move abroad, Liverpool could be the perfect match for him. With the departure of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City edging ever closer, Lacazette could be an ideal replacement for the 20-year-old Englishman. With the departures of some of the club’s biggest names in recent years, the signing of the young and exciting Lacazette would help to bring back the exciting and entertaining football that Liverpool fans are used to admiring at Anfield.
Belgian Christian Benteke has been subject of endless transfer talk over the course of the last two seasons, and he even came close to departing Villa Park when he handed in a transfer request back in July 2013. Luckily for Villa fans, the 24-year-old hit man completed a U-turn and signed a new contract. However, having now spent three seasons at Aston Villa and seen his side subject to a relegation scare in almost every campaign, the young Belgian’s patience could have run out. It would be a tough pill to swallow but surely no surprise to Villa fans if Benteke would decide he wanted to leave the west Midlands club to seek a higher wage, better playing standard and the chance to play European football. For what Benteke is capable of, it seems a waste that he currently plays his trade for a club fighting relegation most seasons. Benteke has notched up a total of 42 goals for Aston Villa since his arrival – no mean feat considering the time he spent on the sidelines after suffering a ruptured achilles that also saw him miss the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Villa have valued the Belgian at £32.5m – a price that Brendan Rodgers could be willing to pay for a striker who has proved that he can score goals in the tough demands of the Premier League.
Rumoured to be a target for fellow Premier League outfits Newcastle United and Swansea City, Aleksandar Mitrovic would be a real coup for the Anfield giants. At just 20 and with three years remaining on his contract, Liverpool may have to dip a little deeper into their pockets to land his signature, but they may very well get their moneys worth. Anderlecht value the Serbian at somewhere in the region of £11m, but would no doubt attempt to squeeze a few million more out of Liverpool if a deal were to be struck. Mitrovic’s qualities include aerial threat, good hold up play and clinical finishing – ideal attributes for the very physical English game. He scored 23 goals in 44 appearances in all competitions for Anderlecht last season, and impressed in the Champions League when he found the back of the net against Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund. Although Steve McLaren is rumoured to be closing in on Mitrovic, a late move by Liverpool would surely tempt the Serbian, with the Merseyside club able to offer him a higher wage and also the chance to play European football.
