Man United new-boy Darmian is best full-back in Italy, says Materazzi

Marco Materazzi believes that Manchester United have signed the best full-back in Italy in Matteo Darmian

Marco Materazzi believes that Manchester United have signed the best full-back in Italy after completing a deal to land Matteo Darmian from Torino on Saturday.

The Italy defender signed a four-year contract with the Red Devils over the weekend after days of speculation linking him with a move to the Old Trafford club.

Darmian has 13 Italy caps to his name and Materazzi has been impressed by what he has seen from the 25-year-old full-back in recent seasons.

Materazzi told Goal: “Darmian plays very well. In the World Cup, he was maybe not the best player but more or less did a good job.

“He has a big opportunity with Manchester United to grow because he’s a good player, he’s playing for the national team and now for Manchester [United]. I think he’s the best wing-back in Italy.”

Darmian started all of Italy’s World Cup matches in Brazil last summer and scored three Serie A goals in 133 games for Torino after joining the club from Palermo in 2011.

He looks set to head off to the United States with his new team-mates for the Red Devils’ pre-season tour next week.

The 20-time English champions finished in fourth place last season and sealed their return to the Champions League.

United kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Tottenham next month.
