Man United transfers: Andy Cole defends David De Gea
Manchester United legend Andy Cole defends David De Gea after the goalkeeper was criticised following a 2-0 defeat by PSG
Andy Cole has leapt to the defence of David De Gea after the Manchester United goalkeeper was criticised for his performance against Paris Saint-Germain last night.
The Spain international was subbed at half-time of their 2-0 defeat after Luke Shaw scored an inadvertent own goal before Zlatan Ibrahimovic doubled the Ligue 1 side’s lead.
If he is there at the start of the season, he should start the season
De Gea’s future at Old Trafford remains unclear after persistent reports linking the club’s and fans’s player of the year with a big-money move to Real Madrid this summer.
But Cole felt De Gea was unfairly singled out by supporters after their first pre-season defeat of their tour of United States.
“If Romero has come to Manchester United not to be second choice, fair play to him because David De Gea is the best goalkeeper at the club,” Cole told Kicca.com.
“I’ve seen people hammering De Gea this morning because he has had an off-game. Well everyone has an off-game.
“Van Gaal has apparently said De Gea will have to fight for his number one spot. But after the season he just had, he should be the number one name down on the team sheet.
“If he is there at the start of the season, he should start the season.
“With the Ramos saga, that’s probably why the De Gea situation has not moved on.
“But if he does go it will be a massive loss for them. His performances last season are the reason why United finish in the top four last season.”
The Spain goalkeeper made 37 Premier League appearances during Louis van Gaal’s first season in charge at Old Trafford.
The Spanish shot stopper was named the players’ player and fans’ player of the year following his impressive 2014/15 campaign.
De Gea, who was signed to replace Edwin van der Sar, won the Premier League title with the Red Devils in 2013.
