Man United transfers: Federico Macheda runs rule over Matteo Darmian
Former Man United striker Federico Macheda backs Matteo Darmian to be a success in the Premier League
Federico Macheda believes Torino defender Matteo Darmian will be a success at Manchester United.
The Italy international is reportedly closing in on an £11m move to Old Trafford after the full-back posted a farewell message to the Torino supporters on Wednesday morning.
Darmian has character and if he finds consistency then I am sure he’ll settle in very well
Louis van Gaal was previously linked with a move for Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne but the England international joined their bitter rivals Liverpool earlier this month.
Former United striker Macheda, who has played with Darmian with Italy’s Under-21 side, believes the right-back will adapt to the style of the Premier League without too much trouble.
“Matteo must certainly expect great things when joining a world-class club,” Macheda told talkSPORT. “I wish him all the best and feel he is ready for this adventure.
“Wearing the Red Devils jersey is certainly a big responsibility, because you feel this scary weight of history on your shoulders and realise that every time you pull the shirt on.
“Darmian has character and if he finds consistency then I am sure he’ll settle in very well. English football is much more physical and in his role it’s important to push forward as well as defend, but his characteristics already suit that.”
The 25-year-old defender scored two goals and made one assist in 33 Serie A appearances last season.
Darmian was named in the Seria A team of the year in 2014 after an eye-catching campaign for Torino.
The right-back has won two man-of-the-match awards in successive games against Roy Hodgson’s England side.
