The France international, who has also been touted as a target for Arsenal, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent days as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his midfield options ahead of his second season in charge at the club.
United are thought to have tabled a £20m bid for Schneiderlin this week as Van Gaal looks to bring the midfielder to the club.
Now, former United defender Ferdinand claims that a deal for Schneiderlin looks set to go through and has backed the Red Devils’ pursuit of the midfielder.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: “£20-something million, it looks like it’s going to be done.
“He’s a player who could add something to United, a bit of steel, can pass the ball and play it through the lines from back to front.
“I think he’s a good player, a good addition to the squad, especially if someone like [Michael] Carrick, who is so influential for United, gets injured.
“I think this guy can step in and help buffer that. I think he’s a very good, talented player.”
The Southampton star has scored 15 goals in 260 games in all competitions for the south-coast club over the past seven seasons.
Earlier this week, speculation linking the midfielder with a transfer to United gathered pace when the club’s photographer followed the midfielder on Twitter.
