The Dutchman fuelled the speculation linking the Red Devils with a move for a forward after he hinted that United were close to securing the signature of a “surprise” striker.
However, the Manchester United boss appears to have backtracked on those suggestions, insisting that he has not yet decided whether he wants to buy a new striker this summer or not.
Speaking at a news conference after Manchester United’s 3-1 pre-season win over the San Jose Earthquakes on Tuesday night, Van Gaal remained typically coy on his transfer plans.
“I don’t know if I want to buy a striker,” Van Gaal told the news conference.
“I have read in the media that a striker is a surprise, but no – I mean something else.”
Manchester United have already signed Memphis Depay, Matteo Darmian, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin so far this summer as Van Gaal looks to transform his side into genuine Premier League title contenders.
The Red Devils kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Tottenham on 8 August.
