Man United transfers: Sergio Ramos still quality, says Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is a big fan of Manchester United target Sergio Ramos
Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United will be signing a player at his peak if they can agree a deal to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid.
The Red Devils have been linked with a £29m swoop for the Spain international over the past couple of weeks after Ramos hinted that his future could lie away from the Spanish capital.
At 29, he should be at his best and physically I think he’ll be fine in the Premier League
Ramos is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2016/2017 campaign after the centre-half stalled on signing a new deal with the 10-time European champions earlier this year.
The former Sevilla defender’s potential move to the Premier League has received a mixed reception, but former Liverpool centre-half Carrager is under no illusion that Ramos would be a top signing for Louis van Gaal.
Carragher told Kicca: “In Ramos, Man United will be signing one of the top defenders in Europe and a leader if they can pull the deal off.
“There is still a feeling that he’s overrated in England, which I disagree with his trophy haul and playing for Real Madrid for so long shows his quality as the pressure to perform for club and country is huge.
“At 29, he should be at his best and physically I think he’ll be fine in the Premier League but he will have to be careful with the referees, who I’m sure will be aware of his disciplinary record if he arrives.”
Ramos has won three La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey crowns and the Champions League.
The Real Madrid defender is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2017 unless the World Cup winner agrees a new deal with the 10-time European champions.
The World Cup winner scored four goals in 42 games in all competitions for Los Blancos last term.
