Man United transfers: Three centre-halves Louis van Gaal could sign
Tom Phillips takes a look at three centre-halves Manchester United could sign in the summer transfer window
Despite replacing Iker Casillas as captain of Real Madrid, Manchester United are still keeping close tabs on the World Cup winning centre-half Sergio Ramos. The 29-year-old has been involved in one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas, with the Red Devils reportedly refusing to sell David De Gea if the Galacticos continue omit the possible transfer of their skipper from the discussions. The ever-reliable centre-half would be a sensational signing for United this summer and a confidence boost to the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who could both learn from the services of the defender. Ramos will bring in leadership qualities that have been lacking at United since the days of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, as well as fill a massive void that many United fans have seen get bigger over the past two seasons.
After an impressive display at Valencia, Nicolas Otamendi has been a hot topic of conversation in transfer gossip columns. Already reportedly desperate to sign for the Red Devils, Otamendi will be a brilliant addition to Louis van Gaal’s side after an impressive debut season with Valencia. With Los Che not competing in Europe, Otamendi was a key member in helping bringing back Champions League football to the Mestalla after the Spanish club finished fourth in La Liga last season. Otamendi helped Valencia maintain an impressive defence record with Los Che conceding 32 goals, which is six less than Real Madrid’s tally, while losing only five games in the league last season. His manager Nuno Santo will, however, be looking to get compensation on Otamendi, who has four years left on his contract, should he be willing to let the defender leave the club.
Another World Cup-winning defender that is linked with a move to Old Trafford, United’s services at the back will be a major boost if they sign Mats Hummels from Borussia Dortmund. At 26, Hummels has the potential to become a major player in United’s future success, both in the short and long-term. The German defender has been on United’s shortlist for some time, and Hummels will be another possible defender van Gaal will be looking into signing the summer. Already being rebuffed on numerous occasions by Borussia Dortmund, United luck would no doubt have changed since Jurgen Klopp – who played a major part in keeping Hummels’ services at Signal Iduna Park – has now left the Rhine club, making it inevitable for United to eventually express their interest in the defender again with the hope of luring the World Cup winner away from BVB with the attraction of Champions League football.
