Man United transfers: Three defenders Red Devils could sign this summer
Shona Duthie considers three potential transfer targets for Manchester United's defence this summer
Hummels has been the name that many United fans have been saying since the start of the transfer window. He has numerous club and country honours to his name, having earned over 30 caps for Germany. He became a international regular in 2010 and was in the German winning side in the World Cup last summer. Hummels has won the Bundesliga twice with Borussia Dortmund qnd the DFL-Supercup in 2013 and 2014. While Hummels would be a great fit for the club, it has been reported that he does not want to leave Borussia Dortmund. He still has two years left on his contract and has been estimated at £21.5m. Louis van Gaal is continuing his search for other reinforcements in defence.
Since joining Fiorentina in the 2012-2013 season, Savic has become a regular inclusion to the team. Last season, he made 29 league appearances and it is his playing form that has attracted interest from Spain and England. United wold need to spend around £20m. Last summer, it was reported that Van Gaal was keen on bringing the defender to Old Trafford. United are in pole position to gain the Montenegrin from the Serie A side. The former Manchester City defender is no stranger to the Premier League and could easily slot into the United team.
Everton starlet Coleman could make a switch to Old Trafford this summer after having impressed during last season’s Premier League campaign. It has been reported that United are keen on the Republic of Ireland star but have yet to make a bid. Coleman has been one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League in recent years and Van Gaal wants to make his back-four options as strong as possible. Coleman has made 185 appearances for Everton, scoring 12 goals and also receiving 28 caps for the Republic of Ireland. Coleman fits the bill for Van Gaal as he can play right-back or he is equally comfortable as wing-back as the Dutchman likes to play three at the back. It is likely that Van Gaal will make more signings this summer and Coleman could be at the top of his list.
