In terms of realistic and suitable replacements for David de Gea should the Spaniard depart Old Trafford for the Bernabeu, Hugo Lloris is one of few options. That is not to say it would be straight-forward securing a deal for the French international to take him from White Hart Lane, but he is one of the highest profile goalkeepers in the world who has consistently proven his ability over a number of years now. The fact rumour has suggested that if Madrid cannot get a deal done for De Gea they may turn to Lloris is case-and-point. There are few recognisably ready-made world-class goalkeepers to turn to, but Lloris is one of them. It is no surprise then that Tottenham would be reluctant to sell their prized asset, however the premise of Champions League football and the opportunity to go to Old Trafford would understandably be hard to resist. Similarly, the Frenchman is not a backup goalkeeper by any stretch so the move is initially dependent on where De Gea plays his football this season. Should De Gea stay, and potentially leave next summer, Man Utd could revisit their interest then.
The bookmakers’ favourite to replace David de Gea if he leaves Man Utd this summer is Jasper Cillessen from Ajax. Part of the reason for that is likely the fact that Cillessen was made the Dutch first-choice goalkeeper under Louis van Gaal’s time at the helm of the national side – including when infamously substituted by the United boss and replaced by Tim Krul for the quarter-final penalty shootout against Costa Rica at last summer’s World Cup. The 26-year-old has reached 23 caps and admitted a move to Old Trafford would represent “a great step” in his career. At the same time, Ajax coach Frank de Boer has admitted it would be a “disaster” to lose Cillessen but if United do come calling, it would be very difficult to hold on. A deal would likely be much less extravagant than one for Lloris of Spurs but in that same light it may prove to be more realistic.
With the revelations made in the past week by Van Gaal that Victor Valdes is on his way out of Old Trafford for refusing to play for the Under-21 side, it looks as though United will be in the market for at least one goalkeeper this summer. The Red Devils are said to have been in talks to sign 28-year-old Argentine, Sergio Romero, who is a free agent after leaving Sampdoria at the end of last season. Having reportedly attracted interest from Real Madrid and Roma among other clubs, the Red Devils could be set to move swiftly and secure the Argentine in place of Valdes whether De Gea leaves the club this summer or not. Like Valdes, Romero would come to the club as a free agent but is presumably seen as a better fit into Van Gaal’s philosophy. Certainly with over 50 international caps to his name, including last summer’s World Cup, Romero would be seen as a more secure backup than Anders Lindegaard or the inexperienced Sam Johnstone.
