Man United transfers: Three goalkeepers Red Devils could sign this summer
Shona Duthie looks at three potential goalkeeping targets for Manchester United this summer
The Ajax goalkeeper started every game for Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team at the World Cup in Brazil last year. Cillessen has recently developed his game having become Ajax’s first choice goalkeeper in 2013. His form with the Dutch giants is one of the reasons why he is being linked with a move to Old Trafford. In the 2014-2015 season, the Dutch international played 32 games, conceded 26 goals and kept 12 clean sheets, one more than David De Gea. Cillessen would be an excellent replacement for the Spaniard. With the news that United is set to sell number two keeper Victor Valdes, Cillessen could be signed as a number two. However, the 26-year-old is more than capable of becoming a number one at United if De Gea was sold by the club.
After Hugo Lloris fracturing his wrist and making him doubtful to be fit for the start of the season, United are reported to be seeking alternatives for their goalkeeping options. Jan Oblak first gained attention following his Man of the Match display in the Champions League against Real Madrid due to a string of impressive saves. Reports have suggested that if United were to sign Oblak to Old Trafford the fee is said to be between £20m and £30m. Atletico Madrid maybe unwilling to sell their 22-year-old Slovenia international after signing him in 2014 from Benfica for £12m. However, if Van Gaal and United decided to sell De Gea, their transfer fee alone could entice Atletico to sell their up and coming goal keeper to the Red Devils. He has made 11 appearances for the Madrid side and has shown much strength to his game in terms of saving long shots and shots from close range.
The Argentinian was first noticed after his World Cup heroics last summer, where he saved two penalties in the semi-final shootout win over the Netherlands to send Argentina to the final. Romero is available on a free transfer after the 28-year-old left Sampdoria last month. He has vast experience as a goalkeeper and he might still have his best years ahead of him. Romero is seeking more game time – and a move to England could give him that possibility. He has been capped for Argentina 62 times and spent last season on loan at Monaco. Romero could easily step up and play the number one role if De Gea was to leave the club. He could also be a perfect number two and play in the League and FA cup as Victor Valdes is set to leave the club.
