The 24-year-old was in fine form as Manchester United prepared for the new season in style, with a dominant 3-1 victory over La Liga giants Barcelona in the International Champions Cup.
I do hope that De Gea shall stay but in this world of football you never know
Louis van Gaal
Van Gaal has bolstered his squad with the summer signings of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Morgan Schneiderlin, Memphis Depay and Matteo Darmian, but the loss of De Gea could hinder the club’s title ambitions.
The highly regarded goalkeeper has been linked with a move back to his homeland throughout the summer but reminded United fans of his world class quality on Saturday night in California.
The Spaniard made a string of athletic saves to keep United in command, managing to deny Sergi Roberto when clean through on goal, and van Gaal was evidently delighted with his performance.
“You have seen him in the first 60 minutes, in spite of his injury, he didn’t train for a week, that he can show his quality already in this game,” Van Gaal told MUTV.
“He has showed his quality I think because the first chance was for Barcelona (stopping Sergi Roberto) and when you stop the first chance then you can score the first goal. That is always the difference in the game.
“Yes, of course, I do hope that De Gea shall stay but in this world of football you never know.”
