Man United transfers: Van Gaal must improve defence, says Red Devils legend
Former Manchester United man Lou Macari believes the Red Devils will challenge for the Premier League title
Manchester United must improve defensively before the start of the Premier League season, according to Lou Macari.
The Red Devils suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in the final game of their pre-season tour of United States on Wednesday night.
I still don’t think they know their best partnership at the back
United manager Louis van Gaal has signed Matteo Darmian in a £12.5m deal from Torini already this summer, whilst the Dutchman is reportedly keen on John Stones.
Although Macari believes Van Gaal has some work to do with his defence, the Red Devils legend is confident United can challenge for the Premier League crown this term.
Macari told talkSPORT: “Everyone was thinking the team was in a great shape but against PSG they let themselves down defensively – they were poor.
“I still don’t think they know their best partnership at the back – maybe someone will come in before the start of the season.”
Van Gaal has signed PSV Eindhoven winger Memphis Depay, World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and Italy international Darmian this summer.
The 20-time English champions are reportedly on the brink of landing Pedro Rodriguez in a £15m deal from Treble winners Barcelona.
