Memphis Depay has revealed that Wayne Rooney helped him through his first outing as a Manchester United player.

The Netherlands international made his Red Devils debut on Friday following his transfer to the Old Trafford club from PSV Eindhoven earlier in the summer.

Depay was involved as Louis van Gaal’s men beat Club America 1-0 in their pre-season friendly in Seattle on Friday night as they continue their preparations for the new season.

And the winger has revealed how the Red Devils skipper helped him to settle in during his first official outing for the Premier League club.

Depay told reporters in Seattle: “Wayne coached me a lot through the game and talked to me about which position I should take and when to defend.

“We have to form a duo and I have the right feeling with him. It’s an honour to play with such a legend like Wazza.”

The 21-year-old, who cost United around £25m, played a pivotal role in PSV’s title-winning season after he scored 22 times in 28 games.

Depay has previously played under Van Gaal in the Netherlands set-up and he helped the Dutch finish third at last summer’s World Cup.
