Nigel Winterburn: Arsenal can’t afford to lose Jack Wilshere to Man City
Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn believes Jack Wilshere has a big role to play in Arsene Wenger's midfield
Arsenal can’t afford to lose Jack Wilshere to Manchester City, according to Nigel Winterburn.
The Gunners midfielder has been linked with a shock move to the Citizens in the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting Manuel Pellegrini could table a £40m offer for the England international.
When he is back at full fitness, he is a player who would be in the starting XI
Wilshere extended his miserable run of injuries last season after he suffered ankle ligament damage against Manchester United in November and didn’t feature for the Gunners again until April.
Arsene Wenger is well-stocked in midfielders, with the likes of Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin all featuring heavily last term, but former Arsenal defender Winterburn believes Wilshere would command a place in his former manager’s strongest XI.
Asked if Arsenal can afford to lose Wilshere, Winterburn told The Sport Review: “I don’t think so.
“He has had two-and-a-half seasons where he has been injured. But when he is back at full fitness, he is a player who would be in the starting XI for sure.”
Wenger has been linked with a move for Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani and Lyon’s prolific Alexandre Lacazette in the summer transfer window.
And Winterburn, who was part of Arsenal’s double-winning side in 1998, is tipping Wenger to strengthen his attacking options before the close of business on 1 September.
“I think he will. He has a lot of midfielders,” Winterburn added. “They might look up front. I’m just waiting until the start of the season to see what happens.”
