Petr Cech confident Arsenal can challenge for Premier League title
Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech believes the Gunners are hungry for more silverware after their FA Cup successes
Petr Cech believes Arsenal can use their FA Cup success as a springboard to challenge for the Premier League title this season.
The Czech Republic completed an £11m switch to Arsenal from reigning champions Chelsea after Cech won 13 major trophies during his 10-year stay at Stamford Bridge.
I believe that this season we can gradually progress and challenge for the top spots
Cech may have collected his fourth Premier League winner’s medal in May, but Arsene Wenger’s side extended their dominance in the FA Cup after a 4-0 win against Aston Villa at Wembley.
And the Arsenal goalkeeper believes the north London side’s back-to-back FA Cup triumphs have made the Gunners even hungrier for silverware ahead of the new season.
“I have to say that winning the FA Cup is a great thing for the confidence of the team, and everyone involved with Arsenal football club,” Cech told Arsenal’s official matchday programme.
“I hope that this is a platform to build on and I believe that this season we can gradually progress and challenge for the top spots.”
Cech continued: “A lot of people say that once you win something big, the motivation goes down. It actually works the other way round.
“Once you win a huge cup – and I can give the example of the Champions League where people said, ‘Oh, they won the Champions League, now they don’t care anymore’ – but actually it was the other way round. It was such an amazing accomplishment, such an amazing feeling that you want to repeat it.
“Once you hold the Premier League trophy or any other trophy in your hand, you want to have that feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment and happiness. You just say, ‘Ok, next year I want to have a go again and I want to feel the same thing again.’ That brings people forward and I think that’s why it’s important to win trophies, because it can actually give you that extra edge. You know what it takes in terms to win it and you want to repeat it.”
Cech could make his first appearance in an Arsenal shirt at Emirates Stadium on Saturday as Wenger’s side face Olympique Lyonnais in their opening game of Emirates Cup.
The FA Cup holders will face Wolfsburg in their final game of the two-day tournament at their home stadium.
