Petr Cech: Why my experience will help me gel with Arsenal defence

Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech hopes to make his experience count as the goalkeeper looks to settle at Emirates Stadium

Petr Cech believes his Premier League experience will prove a major asset as the goalkeeper gets to know his new Arsenal team-mates in the coming weeks.

The 33-year-old Czech Republic international signed a three-year deal with the FA Cup holders earlier this month after Arsenal agreed an £11m deal with Premier League champions Chelsea.

I need to concentrate only on gelling together with my team-mates, with the defence and finding the best possible understanding, I don’t have to look at the other circumstances

Cech won four Premier League titles, four FA Cups, the Champions League and the Europa League during his decorated Stamford Bridge career, earning a reputation as one of the league’s best shot stoppers.

And the Czech says the experience that he amassed during a 10-year career with Chelsea means he doesn’t have to worry about adjusting to a new league and can focus on building a relationship with the Arsenal defence.

“When I arrived, I was discovering every ground and every team’s style of play,” Cech told Arsenal’s matchday programme.

“There was a lot of unknown. But now, 11 years on, I know pretty much every ground in the Premier League and know what to expect which comes to my advantage.

“The understanding of the game, the passion and everything surrounding the Premier League is important and that’s an advantage for me.

“Although I’ve changed club and will have new team-mates, playing for a team that players a different way, all these little factors will help me because I need to concentrate only on gelling together with my team-mates, with the defence and finding the best possible understanding, I don’t have to look at the other circumstances.”

Cech could make his first Arsenal appearance at The Emirates on Saturday as the Gunners face Olympique Lyonnais in their first game of Emirates Cup.

The former Blues shot stopper will be competing with Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina for a starting spot in Arsene Wenger’s first-team.
