Ray Parlour: Arsenal can show Chelsea they mean business at Wembley

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour explains why the Community Shield is an important game to the Gunners

Ray Parlour says Arsenal can land an early blow to Chelsea’s title hopes by beating the Premier League champions in the Community Shield at Wembley.

The FA Cup holders will face Jose Mourinho’s double winners in the season’s curtain raiser at the home of English football on 2 August.

If you can get one over Chelsea before the start of the season, it doesn’t guarantee you can win the league but it certainly gives you a lot of confidence

Arsene Wenger has looked to close the gap between Arsenal and Chelsea with the signing of Petr Cech, who completed his £11m move to The Emirates from Stamford Bridge earlier this month.

And former Arsenal midfielder Parlour, who won the trophy three times during his career, emphasised the importance of the Community Shield as a litmus test for the coming Premier League season.

“It’s a very serious [game],” said Parlour, speaking on behalf of Carlsberg, the Official Beer of the Premier League.

“Playing at Wembley [and] Arsenal have been there the last two seasons. I scored in 1999 in the Charity Shield against Manchester United.

“If you can get one over Chelsea before the start of the season, it doesn’t guarantee you can win the league but it certainly gives you a lot of confidence and belief in the team if you can get a result.”

Wenger has guided Arsenal to five Community Shield crowns during his 19-year reign at the north London club.

Chelsea manager Mourinho, meanwhile, has won the domestic trophy just once in 2005.
