It is the first time that Muguruza has reached a final in any of the four Grand Slams.
Last year, she was a quarter-finalist at the French Open and reached the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Muguruza defeated defending Wimbledon champion Williams 6-2 6-2 at the French Open last year.
However, she was then beaten 6-1 5-7 1-6 by Sharapova in the next round and the Russian went on to win the title in Paris.
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario is the last Spanish woman to reach the final but she lost 6-3 7-5 to Steffi Graf of Germany in 1996.
