Ryan Babel: What Roberto Firmino will bring to Liverpool
Former Liverpool forward Ryan Babel runs the rule over new Reds signing Roberto Firmino
Ryan Babel has backed £29m signing Roberto Firmino to bring a lot of joy to Liverpool supporters next season.
The Brazil international penned a long-term deal with the Reds last month after Liverpool made the forward the second-most expensive singing in the club’s history.
He’s very talented and now it is down to him. He is the kind of player that can give a lot of joy to Liverpool fans because he’s a very skilful player
Firmino, who scored seven goals and made 10 assists in 33 league games last term, played alongside Babel during the Dutch winger’s spell at Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
And Al Ain FC forward Babel, who left Anfield in 2010, backed his former team-mate to bring a lot of flair to Brendan Rodgers’s first-team.
“He is a tricky player. He can dribble, shoot, he has a great shot, he can play a lot of through balls and his assists are very good,” Babel told Liverpool’s website.
“He is actually also great at heading, which maybe you wouldn’t think because he’s not that tall, but he’s very good at it.
“He’s the kind of player that likes the ball at his feet and to do nice things with it, but something he learned in Germany was how to work without the ball and defend. I know how important that is in England, what you do without the ball. It was something he had to learn in Germany.
“I’m very happy for him. He’s very talented and now it is down to him. He is the kind of player that can give a lot of joy to Liverpool fans because he’s a very skilful player.”
Firmino scored 47 goals in 151 appearances in league and cup for the German club following his move from Figueirense in December 2010.
He joins the 18-time English champions after a four-year stay at Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
Firmino is one of six summer signings at Anfield after the Reds snapped up James Milner, Danny Ings, Adam Bogdan, Joe Gomez and Nathaniel Clyne.
