Three reasons Man United can’t afford to let Angel di Maria leave
Jake Evans examines three reasons why Manchester United should keep Angel di Maria at all costs
Despite a disappointing first season at Manchester United, Angel di Maria still managed to record 11 assists in the Premier League from just 27 appearances. He is extremely effective and one of the most creative players in the world. These stats prove that Di Maria can make the difference in key matches without necessarily performing to the best of his ability, and there are not many players who can do that.
PSG’s original offer for the Argentine was thought to be around £28.5m. That is some way short of United’s valuation of the player, but the club still stand to make a significant loss if he is sold in this window. Di Maria was the most expensive player in British transfer history just last summer, and it would be impossible for United to recoup that amount after a sluggish first season in English football. Van Gaal should hold on to the player for the forthcoming campaign as he is still under contract. Di Maria would play a starring role for United as they prepare to challenge for the league title and he could be sold for significantly more money next summer as a result.
There are very few players available in this transfer market that could replace Di Maria. If he does leave, United will be weaker as a result, regardless of who they bring in. Pedro is a brilliant winger and would help to soften the blow but he would struggle to replicate Di Maria’s statistics. Genuinely world-class Bayern Munich duo Mario Gotze and Thomas Muller have been tenuously linked with moves away from the club, but they appear far more likely to stay with the German champions than join Manchester United.
