Three reasons why Man United must sign Sergio Ramos this summer

Tom Phillips takes a look at some reasons why Manchester United would be wise to sign Sergio Ramos this summer

Leadership from the back

There is no doubt that Sergio Ramos sets the standard and discipline of Real Madrid’s back four, especially when he has to deal with the likes of Pepe as a defensive partner. The Spaniard has been pivotal to Real Madrid’s success, demonstrating superb leadership from the back and being reliable when battling the likes of Luis Suarez. This is something United definitely need at the back. It is fair to say that the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Tyler Blackett have had their fair share of defensive blunders this season. As United have not replaced either Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic in defence in terms of quality – and last season proved that – Ramos will be the perfect fit to the puzzle of United’s back four – or three, depends what formation Louis van Gaal wants to play next season. United fans will feel a lot more relaxed next season when they see Ramos in the team sheet

A world-class defender

There is no doubting Ramos’ talent, just have a look at his accolades over the years: La Liga titles, Copa del Rey medals, Champions League, World Cup winner and European Championship winner too. It is clear that Sergio Ramos is a world class defender, again something United have been lacking last season, not even Marcos Rojo was able to step up to the mark last season so the Red Devils will be able to welcome him with open arms and be focused on the big prizes next season – especially now they are back in the Champions League. Ramos will also be able to set the standard for the long term partnership of Jones and Smalling. Smalling was in great form towards the end of the season for United and fans have also tipped him for being a suitable replacement for the captain’s armband and what better player to learn the ropes than Sergio Ramos. The Spaniard has been vice-captain for Real Madrid for the past four seasons and has been more than fit when he stepped to the mark as captain when Iker Casillas was dropped under Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti.

He likes to win – a lot

In Rio Ferdinand’s autobiography, he noted how United played every game to win; when David Moyes came in that fizzled out. So rest assured Rio, Ramos will definitely bring that philosophy back to the table. The Spaniard has already got a proven track record of winning all the competitions for both club and country, with the prospect of playing in England, he will be striving to get trophies back to Old Trafford. In fact the defender is so hungry to succeed that he even has an eye for goal, so he would be a brilliant threat in the air for United whenever they win a corner or free-kick. The defender has scored 55 times from a defensive position in 445 appearances in all competitions for Los Blancos, making him one of the top scorers in La Liga for a defender. Another impressive feat and reason to why United need to sign this man in the summer.
