Three reasons why Man United need to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Shona Duthie examines three reasons why Manchester United must lure Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford

They need a proven forward

Manchester United struggled in front of goal last season as they lacked a dominant forward who could produce more than 20 goals-a-season. Sergio Aguero won the league’s golden boot after scoring 26 goals and laying on eight assists. The Red Devils need a man of his calibre to go into the 2015/16 season as title contenders. Cristiano Ronaldo is certainly the man for the job. He is already classed as one of the greatest to play for the club as he won the golden boot in the 2007/08 season. He became one of four players to win the European golden shoe alongside the English equivalent, emulating the likes of Thierry Henry and Luis Suarez. He scored 31 goals in 34 appearances that brilliant season. Wayne Rooney was United’s top goal scorer last season with 14. United need to improve vastly in this department if they want to succeed against Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal, and Ronaldo may be the main answer to their problems.

Enhances their chance for trophies

Having gone two seasons without a trophy, United fans are craving glory. Ronaldo has won numerous trophies over his spells at Old Trafford and Real Madrid. With three Premier League winner’s medals under his belt as well as the La Liga title in 2011/12, Ronaldo would add experience the United team need. With the exits of Radamel Falcao and Robin van Persie, Ronaldo fits perfectly into manager Louis van Gaal’s plans. Ronaldo scored 48 goals last season along with 16 assists in La Liga, stats that none of the United players can match. Ronaldo has a lot of confidence in front of goal, if he can carry his La Liga form to the Premier League, the Red Devils would storm to victory and trophies. The Red Devils fans would welcome Ronaldo back with open arms. He could retire a Manchester great and legend if he was to come back to the club following his exit in 2009.

Deemed as the best player in the world

Having won the Fifa Ballon d’Or three times with back-to-back wins in 2013 and 2014, Ronaldo was deemed as the best player in the world. He has scored 50 goals-a-season for the last four campaigns. He became the first player to score in six consecutive El Classicos and 23 hat-tricks in La Liga. He was La Liga’s top goal-scorer last season, beating Lionel Messi by five goals. One of his greatest achievements was scoring 17 Champions League goals in 2014, which not only broke a record but also sent Real Madrid to their 10th European trophy. He has now won the competition twice, once with United and once with Madrid. Ronaldo has scored 468 goals and is fast approaching the 500 mark. With these accolades, United need to get their star striker back to Old Trafford this summer. It will certainty boost their chances in any competitions as Ronaldo has a significant presence and stamina on the field that is hard to match for any defender. Ronaldo says that he will finish his playing career at The Bernabeu. However, he has expressed his love for United. Having a player like him can only mean great things for the Manchester club.
