Three reasons why PSG target Angel Di Maria should stay at Man United

Three reasons why Paris Saint-Germain target Angel di Maria should persevere at Manchester United

Prove his worth

Manchester United signed Angel Di Maria for a British record fee of £59.7m last summer. His performances for Real Madrid had been exceptional and he was deservedly the man-of-the-match in their Champions League final victory over Atletico after a near-perfect display. Having helped Argentina reach the World Cup final, few doubted that he would be able to justify his price-tag. However, Di Maria did not live up to expectations at United last season. After an electrifying start, he appeared lethargic and half-fit for the majority of the campaign. He struggled to adapt to Louis van Gaal’s complex system and was often deployed out of position as he paid the price for his versatility. Di Maria is one of the best footballers in the world. He has proved that in the past and he should stay at United in order to show his true quality in the Premier League. A difficult and injury-plagued first season in English football is now behind him. If Di Maria has a successful pre-season and plays to the best of his ability next year, £59.7m could end up looking like a bargain.

Summer signings

United’s activity in the transfer market has been exciting and ambitious. Adding Bayern’s Bastian Schweinsteiger, PSV’s Memphis Depay and Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin to a midfield that already boasts the likes of Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind, Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick is nothing short of frightening. On paper, Di Maria is still the pick of the bunch and if used correctly, he could be the difference between a top four finish and a Premier League title. Those signings will significantly ease the responsibility on the shoulders of the Argentine and he should be allowed to create and flourish in his favoured role. United have clearly demonstrated their ambition with their summer arrivals and Di Maria should feel inspired by such a signal of intent.

Competitive league

If Di Maria does leave United this summer, PSG are his most likely suitors. Laurent Blanc is interested in signing the midfielder and they are financially capable of perusing a move after having their FFP restrictions lifted by Uefa. PSG are a glamorous and attractive club that can guarantee Champions League football, but Ligue 1 does not present a domestic challenge. Blanc’s side have secured the league title in each of the last three seasons by at least eight points. Lyon finished second last year and are PSG’s most troublesome opponents, but they look set to lose their talismanic striker Alexandre Lacazette this summer and will be significantly weaker as a result. If Di Maria opts to stay at United, he will be battling with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City for the league title. It is often said that are no easy games in the Premier League. Di Maria would have to perform at the highest level every weekend and there would be no room for complacency which would only make him a better player.
