Bastian Schweinsteiger will miss Manchester United’s pre-season clash with Barcelona on Saturday due to injury, Louis van Gaal has confirmed.

The German World Cup winner has been struggling with a “little injury” sustained in training and will not feature for Van Gaal’s men against the Champions League holders.

Schweinsteiger has so far featured twice for the Red Devils during their pre-season tour of the USA but will sit out Saturday night’s clash.

David De Gea, however, could be set to make his first appearance of United’s pre-season tour against Luis Enrique’s men.

Van Gaal told United’s website: “Schweinsteiger cannot play because he had a little injury. So maybe I have Schweinsteiger in my head in the line-up but I cannot do that, but I will play the line-up I think could play against Tottenham.

“We play the first 60 minutes so I have to make a selection already between players, if you play 60 minutes or 30. Our building-up programme was 45 so now you can see which direction I think.”

Van Gaal also revealed that Angel di Maria will not feature against Barcelona after the Argentina international arrived on his club’s tour following an extended summer holiday.

On Di Maria, Van Gaal said: “He cannot play in the game because we have to build him up.

“When you come out of your holidays you cannot play a game immediately so that is out of the question.”

Manchester United kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on the opening weekend of the season.
