Wimbledon 2015: Caroline Wozniacki out as Maria Sharapova progresses

Caroline Wozniacki loses 6-4 6-4 to Garbine Muguruza in the last 16 of Wimbledon as Maria Sharapova progresses

Caroline Wozniacki admitted that she struggled to adapt to the speed of the court after being knocked out of Wimbledon at the last-16 stage by Garbine Muguruza.

The Dane was bidding to reach the quarter-finals at the All England Club for the first time but lost 6-4 6-4 to Garbine Muguruza on Court No2.

“I think I struggled a little bit with the timing today,” said Wozniacki after the loss.

“Obviously she played well. She served well, she returned well. It was what I expected from her. She tries to take the ball early and everything.

“But I felt like I struggled a little bit with the timing. I felt like it was a completely different court than the other ones I played on. I felt like the grass was different.

“She accustomed to that better than I did.”

Meanwhile, Maria Sharapova is through to the last eight after beating Zarina Diyas of Kazakhstan 6-4 6-4.

Sharapova, who will next face American Coco Vandeweghe, said: “I think I’ve worked through a few different opponents, different conditions, as well, a few different courts.

“I put myself in different situations, yet have been able to close out the matches in two sets. That’s a positive in these last eight days.”

Asked about her next opponent, Sharapova added: “I think it’s been a tremendous effort for her to get to this stage of the tournament.

“With the serve she has, her game really revolves around that serve, and she’s been using it quite effectively in her previous four matches.”
