Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits surprise at Chelsea signing
Arsene Wenger concedes that he was surprised to see Pedro join Chelsea ahead of Manchester United
Arsene Wenger has admitted his surprise at seeing Pedro Rodriguez join Chelsea last week following the speculation linking the Spain international with Manchester United.
The Red Devils were thought to be the front-runners in the race for the forward’s signature this summer, but the 28-year-old put pen to paper on a long-term deal with the Blues on Thursday after Chelsea agreed a £21.1m deal with Barcelona.
Pedro had also been linked with a move to Arsenal in recent seasons before eventually opting to join Chelsea in a bid to regain some regular first-team playing time.
However, Wenger insisted that Arsenal were not in the market to sign the player after conceding that the player’s eventual move to Stamford Bridge took him by surprise.
Speaking at a news conference on Friday morning, Wenger told reporters: “It was a surprise to me because I thought he was landing at Manchester but he finally landed in London.
“The story was out for such a long time that I thought he was going to go to Manchester, but then suddenly in 24 hours [he joined Chelsea].
“We’ve seen that before on the transfer market. I don’t know what happened exactly.”
“Asked if Arsenal were keen to sign Pedro, he added: “No. We have many players on the flanks. Many, many players.”
Arsenal take on Liverpool in the Premier League on Monday night as they look to notch up their second win of the season.
