Arsenal signing Petr Cech still world-class, insists Liverpool legend
Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness says Arsenal signing Petr Cech shouldn't be judged on his nightmare debut
Graeme Souness says Arsenal signing Petr Cech will prove that he is a top-class goalkeeper despite a forgettable debut.
The Hammers edged into a first-half lead after Cheikhou Kouyate beat Cech to a set-piece delivery and guided a header past the stranded Arsenal goalkeeper.
He has never been anything other than a top class goalkeeper, and he will continue to be just that
West Ham forward Mauro Zarate doubled the away side’s lead in the second half after the Uruguay international caught Cech out at his near post on his Emirates Stadium debut.
And former Liverpool legend Souness, who claimed Cech could inspire Arsenal to title glory before their shock defeat, leapt to the defence of the Czech Republic international.
“Don’t judge him after one game,” Souness is quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
“Arsenal will not be far away again, Petr Cech will still be one of the best goalkeepers in the world come the end for the season, and he will prove that.
“I am standing my ground on a very solid platform. He has never been anything other than a top class goalkeeper, and he will continue to be just that.”
Arsenal goalkeeper Cech joined the FA Cup holders in an £11m deal from defending Premier League champions Chelsea last month.
The 33-year-old shot stopper won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, four FA Cups and three League Cups.
