Arsenal striker would have welcomed Karim Benzema signing
Olivier Giroud says he would have welcomed the addition of Karim Benzema at Arsenal this summer
Olivier Giroud admits that he would have been thrilled to see Arsenal sign Karim Benzema from Real Madrid this summer.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a big-money swoop for the France international forward during the summer months as Arsene Wenger considered bolstering his attacking options at Emirates Stadium.
It would have been good if Karim had signed too
However, a move failed to materialise and Benzema appears to be fully committed to Real Madrid this season.
It remains to be seen whether Wenger will move to bring in a new forward before the close of the summer transfer window on Tuesday.
But Arsenal striker Giroud insists that he would have welcomed the addition of Benzema at the north London club, as Wenger looks to guide his side to their first Premier League title since 2004.
Giroud told beIN Sports, as reported by TEAMtalk: “The coach [Wenger] knows very well what he is doing, and sometimes you should not buy just to buy, and sometimes there are not players out there that you need, who are available.
“We have a very good squad, with quality, and I am sure that with this squad we can go very far. But it would have been good if Karim had signed too.”
He continued: “I would have been surprised if you had read a lot of things about my possibly leaving the club, because that was never on the table.
“Now, I am very good here, I say it, I repeat it. It is true that every year here there is speculation about a new striker signing.
“There were seasons when we signed [Alexis] Sanchez and [Danny] Welbeck, others when we were talking about [Luis] Suarez.
“It is obvious that in a club, a team, where a lot is expected, we need several good attackers and I understand that the fans want that we spend more money.”
Arsenal notched up their second Premier League win of the season on Saturday as they secured a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United.
