Arsenal transfers: Thierry Henry wants Karim Benzema signing
Thierry Henry says Arsenal will be able to challenge for the title if they sign Karim Benzema from Real Madrid
Thierry Henry believes Arsenal will be genuine Premier League title contenders if they are able to sign Karim Benzema from Real Madrid this summer.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with a big-money move for the Real Madrid forward in recent days as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster his attacking options at Emirates Stadium.
Arsenal have been touted as potential title contenders by many ahead of the start of the 2015-16 campaign as Wenger aims to guide his side to their first top-flight crown since 2004.
And former Gunners striker Henry feels that the signing of Benzema would transform his former team into serious contenders for the title.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Henry said: “I always say it’s their year but there is a genuine buzz around the place right now,” the former Gunners captain told Drivetime.
“I think they can challenge this year for real if they stay injury-free.
“Olivier Giroud alone as a striker there – you can’t win the league, you need another type of striker. I think Giroud is doing really well – he went on to score 14 goals in 18 games, that’s amazing.
“But sometimes you need a different type of striker and I think that if they can get Benzema, suddenly they are a real title contender and also in the Champions League.”
Asked if Benzema would help Arsenal win the league, Henry replied: “Yes. But the Champions League is a difficult one.”
Arsenal, who finished third and won the FA Cup last season, kick off their Premier League campaign with a home clash against West Ham United at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
