Arsenal transfers: Arsene Wenger updates fans on remaining plans
Arsene Wenger says he is still "optimistic" that he will be able to bring in a new striker at Arsenal before the transfer deadline
Arsene Wenger says that he remains “optimistic” that he will be able to bolster his Arsenal squad ahead of the close of the summer transfer window next week.
The Gunners have so far only brought in Petr Cech from Chelsea this summer despite the north London side having been linked with a host of other players.
I am optimistic but not more than before and not less
Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani have both been touted as potential targets for the Emirates Stadium outfit in recent weeks.
And quizzed over his remaining transfer window plans on Saturday afternoon, Wenger said on BT Sport: “Look, we are out there and working on it.
“I am optimistic but not more than before and not less, it’s just that with these kind of things it’s very difficult to predict.
“We have still Danny Welbeck out, Jack Wilshere out and we had Mesut Ozil out, who are all offensive players.
“You want always more goal-scorers but I believe that at the moment our finishing has not been absolutely clinical and we have to focus on that.
“I’ve good experience [in the transfer market] but that doesn’t make it predictable.”
Wenger was speaking after his Arsenal side returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United on Saturday.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s deflected shot in the 52nd minute was all that separated the two teams after Newcastle were reduced to 10 men when Aleksandar Mitrovic was sent off early on for a dangerous challenge on Francis Coquelin.
