Daley Blind and Memphis Depay couldn’t hide their disappointment on Instagram after Manchester United were held to a goalless draw with Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Red Devils failed to beat Newcastle and Netherlands goalkeeper Tim Krul at Old Trafford after Javier Hernandez was denied by the shot stopper, while Wayne Rooney had a goal disallowed when the captain finally found the back of the net.

And former Ajax defender Blind, who has been used in a centre-half role by manager Louis van Gaal this season, urged his Red Devils team-mates to stay positive after a stalemate:

“Gutted with the result, important now to keep the spirit up and look forward to the next game! #MUFC”

Blind’s compatriot Memphis Depay, who made the move to United from Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven earlier this summer, showed some spark against the Magpies, but couldn’t beat his fellow Dutchman Depay:

“Disappointed we couldn’t get the three points today. On to the next one. #GGMU”

United defender Chris Smalling, who is part of Van Gaal’s new-look centre-half partnership, felt the Red Devils produced one of their better performance but just couldn’t make the breakthrough:
