Charlie Nicholas: Who Arsenal need to sign in transfer window
Former Arsenal midfielder Charlie Nicholas says the Gunners need to sign in the summer transfer window
Charlie Nicholas says Arsenal need to sign a centre-half and a couple of forwards if Arsene Wenger’s side are to challenge for the Premier League title.
The Gunners have made an underwhelming start to their Premier League campaign after a 2-0 loss to West Ham United before a close-fought 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon.
If a top, top player comes along like Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, I would take him in a heart-beat
Wenger has signed just 33-year-old Czech Republic international Petr Cech in an £11m deal to Arsenal from Chelsea in the summer transfer window so far.
And former Gunners midfielder Nicholas reckons the north London side are still some players short of a squad that is capable of launching a sustained Premier League title challenge.
“Arsenal are strong and I’ve tipped them to win the Premier League but I would still like to see them sign another holding midfield player,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.
“Francis Coquelin will be walking a tight-rope every week because of the way he plays and he’ll pick up suspensions, so another defensive midfielder would be good. Wenger’s got Mikel Arteta, who can do a job there, and he’s also got a couple of young kids who he wants to fill that role, but I think he’ll let Mathieu Flamini go.
“Also, if a top, top player comes along like Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema, I would take him in a heart-beat.
“However, I don’t think Wenger will go into the market.”
The north London side made the breakthrough in the first half after Mesut Ozil teed up Gunners striker Olivier Giroud to finish past Alex McCarthy.
Palace defender Joel Ward equalised before half-time, but Damien Delaney deflected Alexis Sanchez’s header past his own goalkeeper to hand victory to Arsenal.
