Chelsea 2 Swansea City 2: Player ratings as Thibaut Courtois sees red

Player ratings as 10-man Chelsea are held to a 2-2 draw by Swansea City in their Premier League opener

Chelsea

Thibaut Courtois Had an early injury scare in the warm-up. Great stop to deny Gomis from close-range but Ayew dispatched the rebound. Sent off in the second half and conceded a penalty after he brought down Gomis inside the area. 5/10

Branislav Ivanovic Showed adventure down the right wing as he looked to keep Montero pegged back. But he did struggle to contain the Swansea forward. He glanced a second-half header over the crossbar. 6

Gary Cahill Couldn’t prevent Ayew from temporarily levelling. A trademark Cahill performance. 6

John Terry The Chelsea captain made a vital challenge to deny Gomis in the 15th minute. Couldn’t do deny Ayew, though. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta Won a free-kick for Chelsea in a dangerous area. Had a testing 90 minutes up against Ayew. 6

Nemanja Matic Committed a number of professional fouls to prevent Swansea exposing Cahill and Terry’s lack of pace. 6

Cesc Fabregas He was quiet yet effective with his passing. Forced to embrace a more defensive role thwart Jefferson and dropped even deeper after Courtois’s red card. 5

Willian The attacking midfielder was a threat down Taylor’s wing. On the rare occasion he swapped to the left wing, his cross was deflected past Fabianski. Didn’t step up fast enough, which allowed Gomis to draw a foul from Courtois. 7

Oscar The Brazil international broke the deadlock which beat all his team-mates and the Swansea defence. Oscar was sacrificed for Begovic. 7

Eden Hazard The PFA player of the year made a bright start to the 2014/15 campaign, although his team-mates weren’t always on the same wavelength. Looked the most likely Chelsea player to find a winner. 7

Diego Costa His hamstring didn’t look in bad nick when he went head-to-head with Fernandez before the Swansea defender won the ball with a well-timed tackle. 6

Subsitutes

Asmir Begovic Couldn’t make a heroes entrance as Gomis beat the Chelsea No2. Pulled off a number of important saves. 7

Swansea City

Lukasz Fabianski With a host of bodies in his way, the Swansea goalkeeper had little time to react to Oscar’s free-kick. Powerless to prevent Willian’s cross deflecting over his head and into the net. 7

Kyle Naughton Decent performance from the former Tottenham defender. 6

Federico Fernandez Outstanding tackle to deny Costa a sight on goal despite the Stamford Bridge crowd demanding a spot-kick. Deflected Willian’s cross past Fabianski. 7

Ashley Williams The Swansea captain marshalled the back four well. Managed to keep Costa largerly quiet. 8

Neil Taylor Struggled at times against Chelsea star Hazard. Decent performance. 6

Jonjo Shelvey He was adventurous from the start despite the presence of Matic. Brilliant through pass to tee up Gomis, who couldn’t beat Terry. The Swansea man appears to have picked up a thing or two from Steven Gerrard during his time at Liverpool, starting the move which led to a second-half penalty. 8

Ki Sung-yueng The midfielder was forced off near the end of the first half with a hamstring problem. 5

Andre Ayew A robust start to life in Premier League from the summer signing. Was alert to lift his finish past Courtois at second time of asking. 8

Gylfi Sigurdsson The Iceland midfielder was kept relatively quiet by Matic and Fabregas. 6

Jefferson Montero (Man of the match) The speed-merchant was careless in possession but more than compensated going forward. His pace caused the Premier League’s most-consistent right-back plenty of problems. 8

Bafetimbi Gomis Played through on goal but dwindled on the ball which allowed Terry to make a superb recovery tackle. Won a second-half penalty and dispatched his spot-kick past Begovic. 7

Substitutes

Jack Cork He replaced Ki in the first half and was booked within minutes of his introduction. 5

Wayne Routledge Brilliant run to test Begovic, who pushed the substitute’s effort to safety. 5
