Crystal Palace 1 Arsenal 2: Olivier Giroud talks up title challenge
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud talks up the north London side's chances of winning Premier League title
Olivier Giroud says Arsenal will join the Premier League title race after their first victory of the season at Crystal Palace.
Germany international Mesut Ozil found Olivier Giroud with a cross in the 16th minute and the Arsenal striker fired past Alex McCarthy in the Palace goal.
We said at the beginning of the championship that we want to win the league so we will join the title race
Eagles defender Joel Ward drilled in a 25-yard equaliser before the half-time to ensure a nervy second half for Arsenal after a 2-0 loss to West Ham last week.
And a deflected header from Alexis Sanchez in off Damien Delaney secured a much-needed three points for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Giroud understood last weekend’s criticism of Arsenal but insisted the Gunners are ready to challenge for the top-flight crown.
“I said before the game we really needed these three points to bounce back after the performance at home when we lost against West Ham.
“We could have scored more goals in doing a better choice with the last pass but we are really happy to get the three points.
“You always get criticised when you lose, especially at home. We said at the beginning of the championship that we want to win the league so we will join the title race.”
Giroud accepted that Arsenal can’t afford poor performances if the Gunners want to win the league, praising the north London side’s ability to respond.
“When you say that you have to face expectations,” Giroud added.
“It was a bad performance (last week) but even though we lost last week the most important in football is to bounce back the week after and keep your faith in your game, which is what we tried to do and succeeded to do today.”
