Darren Anderton says Toby Alderweireld is a good signing for Tottenham Hotspur.

The Belgium international completed a £11.5m move to White Hart Lane from Atletico Madrid despite interest from his former club Southampton.

Alderweireld spent the 2014/15 season on loan at St Mary’s and was widely-tipped to pen a permanent deal with Ronald Koeman’s side.

However, Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino managed to beat the Saints to Alderweireld’s signature following the exit of centre-halves Younes Kaboul and Vlad Chiricheș.

Speaking to The Sport Review, former Tottenham midfield Anderton explained why the Belgium defender was an astute acquisition for the north London side.

“He is good,” Anderton said, speaking at a Play With A Legend event.

“Unfortunately for Younes, he had injury problems. Chiricheș never really settled or got enough games to see the best of him.

“Toby did a great job at Southampton and he knows what the league is all about. He loves to defend – that is what you want.”

Alderweireld scored one goal in 26 Premier League appearances last season during his season-long loan at Southampton.

Tottenham start their Premier League campaign with a clash against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
