Gary Neville: Why Arsenal won’t win title with Santi Cazorla
Manchester United legend Gary Neville says Arsenal won't win Premier League title with Santi Cazorla in midfield
Gary Neville says Arsenal won’t win the Premier League title with Santi Cazorla in a centre-midfield role.
The Gunners midfielder has started alongside Francis Coquelin in a central position for the north London side’s opening two Premier League games of the season.
As much as I like him, as much as I think he’s a great football player and I love watching him I still have that thing
The Spain international was particularly influential as Arsene Wenger’s side recorded their first top-flight win of the season thanks to a 2-1 win at Crystal Palace.
But Manchester United legend Neville reckons Arsenal are still lacking a proper centre-midfielder to win their first Premier League crown since 2004.
“Watching Arsenal and watching the centre of midfield, you talk about Cazorla and he’s a fantastic player. He almost feels like he’s candidate for Man of the Match every time he plays.” Neville told Sky Sports.
“He always wants the ball, he always does stuff on the ball and you think ‘that’s brilliant’ but the burning question comes back every time I think of him. Every time I’ve got this niggling thing in the back of my mind, can they win the league with him as a central midfield player?
“And I don’t know why but my answer is always no. As much as I like him, as much as I think he’s a great football player and I love watching him I still have that thing.”
The 30-year-old midfielder has helped the north London side win back-to-back FA Cups over the past two seasons.
Cazorla has netted 23 times in 108 Premier League appearances for the Gunners during a four-year stay at The Emirates.
The Spanish playmaker, who won Euro 2008 and Euro 2012 with La Roja, moved to Arsenal in a £11m deal from Malaga in 2012.
